BAGHDAD, July 5 (VOI) – A foundation stone for a project to upgrade the Baghdad International Highway at a cost of 50 million dollars was laid on Saturday by the Baghdad secretary general, Saber al-Issawi, and the capital's operations chief, Lt. General Abboud Qonbor, a security official said.
"The project, which will take 90 days, stretches from al-Qadissiya neighborhood to the airport, passing by the al-Amiriya neighborhood in the west Baghdad intersection of al-Karkh," according to Maj. General Qassem Atta, the spokesman for the Baghdad operations command, told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).
Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and Baghdad province. With a municipal population estimated at 7,000,000, it is the largest city in Iraq. It is the second largest city in the Arab world (after Cairo) and the second largest city in southwest Asia (after Tehran).
Located on the Tigris River, the city dates back to at least the 8th century, and probably to pre-Islamic times.
Once the center of Dar al-Islam (the abode of Islam), Baghdad has been a center of violent conflict since 2003 because of the ongoing Iraq war.

KARBALA, July 5 (VOI) – Karbala's mayoralty commenced executing five projects inside the city, with a total cost of more than three billion Iraqi dinar (ID), said the mayoralty's media director on Saturday.
"On Saturday, work commenced to execute frequent projects to develop Karbala's streets and inlets, and to construct entertainment gardens," Majid Naji told Aswat al-Iraq – Voices of Iraq – (VOI).
"The projects' total cost is 3,240,000,000 ID, as part of the 2008 regions' development budget of Karbala's mayoralty," he said.
"Those projects are to be finalized within 10 months," he noted.
The holy city of Karbala lies 110 km southwest of Baghdad.
